Cosette Moon Willis

victorious, beautiful, precious, loyal, good, confident spirit

The novel Les Misérables left a lasting impact on my (Josh’s) life from its first few pages. One of the most central characters is a girl named Cosette. Cosette was dealt a miserable hand of cards as a child born into poverty. She would experience even more hardship by losing her mother and experiencing other afflictions completely out of her control. But her story does not end in the darkness it was bent towards from her birth. She is fought for, rescued, provided for, and becomes a reason for her adoptive father to keep pressing on in the midst of his own struggle. Her father, Jean Valjean, is no stranger to redemption. He himself was transformed by an act of grace earlier in the novel at the hands of a bishop. Cosette grows to become a beautiful woman who is the delight of her father. Cosette is worth sacrificing anything and everything for; she is victorious in overcoming the myriad of challenges that she inherited. She is loyal to her father and others, and she is unequivocally good.

We pray our little Cosette does not have to go through any of the hardships of her namesake. However, we are not naïve to the fallen world that she is born into. We dream that our Cosette embodies the character of overcoming all hardship that comes her way, that she is loyal to those she loves, that she trusts her value and beauty, and that she is good to all. She is certainly precious in her parents’ eyes.

We sense our Cosette has a confident spirit that will sustain her through her journey ahead. Her confidence comes from her maker who does not make mistakes and reveals more of himself in each person that bears his image. May her confidence lead others into living a more full life of their own.

We’ve chosen Moon for Cosette’s middle name. As the moon reflects the light of the sun, we dream of our daughter reflecting the light of Christ. May her own life be radiant and a joy to all, but may that light point others to the goodness, kindness, and love of Jesus. O Lord, will you empower us to raise our daughter to follow you in your kingdom forevermore. May she be a delight to all and a tangible presence of your beauty, grace, and love.
